PAUL D

Why is Paul D the kind of man who can walk into a house and make the women cry?

  1. Paul D is a man who acts with a certain demeanor and confidence that eminates onto the people around him. Paul D is a man who women such as Sethe feel an instant feeling of comfort with. This feeling is something which is rare amongst any person. Quoting Toni Morrison, "Strong women and wise women told him things they only told each other". Conviction, a singular attribte, which even in a slave is recognized and admired by all. When it is presented, it is appreciated as well as adored by all. This is why Paul D is described in this manner.

  2. Paul D has a magnetic personality and attracts women to him. As a result of feeling safe with him, both young, old, wise and strong women share their innermost secrets and pain with him. They allow him to see their vulnerabilities without fear that he will demean them. He presents as kind and the women see "something blessed in his manner" which draws them to him as if he were a savior who eases their pain and solves their problems. Because Paul D has endured suffering as a slave, he empathizes with Sethe by gently massaging her scarred back caused by brutal beatings. Sethe completely yields to Paul D believing that he will take care of her.

  3. Paul D is man who understands Women's struggles, well he understands Sethe's. He is able to walk into the house and make her cry because they went through the harsh times together while School teacher owned Sweet Home. Also, he makes her cry because in the book it says that he is the last male alive from Sweet Home which means that Sethe's Husband is now dead.

  4. It is to my belief that the reason why Paul D makes women cry is because Paul D possesses a special essence of innocence, a rarity among males, that allows women to pour emotion. It is because of the ideal and rare combination for women's support, male and intuitively, openly emotional, the chance to remove hindered emotional trauma becomes irresistible. Also, Paul D too has endured the soul torture from slavery which gives him a profound understanding of pain.

  5. Paul D could walk into a house and make women cry "because with him, in his presence, they could. There was something blessed in his manner." (Pg 20)
Paul D has experienced the tribulations of slavery as the women who surround him has. He is compassionate, welcoming and his sanguine allows women around him to confide in him. He is a strong reliable man in a world of racism and senseless hatred. Paul's lack of fear reverberates through his surroundings thus assumes the role of a protector.

  6. There is a certain relatability to Paul D. He is very human. While he has a side to him that is definitely man in its most primitive sense, he is well-mannered and has an understanding in his eyes. His soul is very valuable to him. He is a veteran of harsh experiences but, instead of acting like those experiences elevate him, he brings himself down to the level of the surrounding people.

  7. This is just an opinion:

Paul D has dealt with enough in his life to carry himself with confidence. His eyes are open to reality. he has faced oppression in the eye and spat at it. At least that is the impression that I get. His assured, strong-grounded personality would be enough to make anybody question their own confidence. I know that I am personally fearful of those more confident that me. And yes, if I get into the position where I question myself, I may cry I may become angry, I may become depressed. Only thing to do is come out stronger.

  8. Sethe feels comfortable with Paul D because he has a deep respect for her which he may have built through his experiences, but we dont know how he is with most women. As well, Sethe has a respect for him which is built up through a natural fear, instinct of male dominance. The ideal interaction between men and women is a threat because they do not fully understand eachother, when a man walks into a room, there is a change of spirit for the woman, depending on her relationship with him. Paul D is feared, but he is not a threat because he talks to the women, forming a thin layer of comfort around fear.

  10. Paul D is the kind of person, that women especially can feel so comfortable with him that they can show their true colors and not be afraid of what he will think of them because they know that he is not the kind of man to judge people. They know that they can trust Paul D in that they don't always have to be strong and put up a wall; they can just be themselves and cry if they want to.

  11. In my opinion, I think Paul D lost his brutal manhood after leaving Sweet Home. I think after experiencing the pure nastiness of slavery, he buried what made him unique as a man. I think he is the kind of man who can walk into a house and make the women cry due to the fact that he has gone through so much in his life. He can connect and identify with any woman's pain or struggle. So, women are willing to open up to him because they know he has been through what they have been through. This is exemplified with his experience with Sethe.

  12. Paul D can walk into a house and make women cry because of his personality. "Because of his presence, they could. There was something blessed in his manner"(pg.20). His personality is very understanding and he does not judge. When he sees Sethe and her scars, her appearance does not bother him, so it gives her a sense of comfortableness. So therefore, women can feel they can cry and show there true selves.

  13. Paul D is a kind hearted and sensitive. When he walks into a room full of women the women can feel his presence and automatically get a sense that he can listen to them without judgement. He has been through many struggles and can relate to the women on some level. He is able to create comfort for the women which gives them the chance to open and up and cry because they were never able to show their true selves before.

  14. The reason Paul D can just walk into a house and make the women cry is because he is the person who would "cry with you". He brings a sense of unconditional love, that no matter what, he loves you and understands you. Paul D has a past, he can relate to most people. Paul D is the only person that can make someone that is so distraught like Sethe, feel secure and safe.

  15. Paul D can walk into a house and make a women cry because he is the man everyone wants people cry over his presences, the way he is so blessed with manner. I wouldn't go as far as to say he is the prefect man because if he is "the perfect man" why didn't Sethe choose him over Halle? I think the real question is what does Halle have that Paul D doesn't that made sethe choose Halle? Because if every women cries over than Paul D then damn Halle must be some man!

  16. Paul D's presence makes women cry tears of comfort. Tears of satisfaction. Tears of safety. Tears of finally being comfortable enough to breathe. He has such a power in his presence that make women feel safe. Paul D brings security to every woman he is with.

  17. To start off, Paul D is one of the last live memories Sethe has of Halle and her past. They had both gone through the same thing and she is still living in the past where as he is living in the future in hopes of working towards a better life. He continues to be there for her and support her. He makes Sethe feel secure and protected having a man look after her.

  18. Paul D's presence in the novel creates a sense of relativity within the readers. We view Paul D as a character with wisdom- one who has endured horrific hardships, yet instead of growing calloused, has used his experiences to transform into a compassionate and empathetic man. He yearns for acceptance and understanding, and in order to receive this affection, he radiates these same qualities.

  19. Paul D is a dominant and yet loved person. He is looved because he shows compassion to the opposite sex. Women such as Sethe cry because she is torn between two men in her life. But the main reason is, seeing Paul D reminds Sethe of the harsh times they have gone though which brings a woman to tears. They have both gone through struggles and are going through trauma together. Having that sort of compassion and understanding, Sethe and Paul D become a couple.

  20. Paul D has this way about him that makes women feel comfortable around him. He is the type of person that talks sincerely and understands women and their tough experiences because he can empathize with them. When he is around Sethe feels the need to blurt out all the pent up feeling and memories that have haunted her for a while.

  21. Paul D is the only memory that Sethe has of her husband. She trys to relate everything similar they both have in common. He is supportive and very understanding of what each character believes in and the setting thats taking place. He also trys to fit in and blend within the mother, daughter connection, of Sethe and Denver.

  22. Paul D is a man who understands women, Sethe feels comfort around Paul D and feels she can talk to him on a personal level. He has the ability to make Sethe happy because he is loving and a warm person.

  23. Paul D has a very warms soul. He has been through so much pain and despair in his life, that it is almost impossible not to have compassion for others. He has a gentle personality and woman are attracted to this. He is not the egotistical male that is protrayed in many works of literature. He does not feel he has to prove himself to anybody. He is very protective of woman (Sethe) and he will not let anybody hurt them. He understands woman and human nature. His kindness is innate.

  24. I feel as though Paul D has been softened by his experiences. Not made weak, but like Gaby sad, been made compassionate. It is easy for women to open up to Paul D because he simply listens--without judgement. As humans, all we want is to have our feelings validated, and Paul D does so effortlessly.

Sethe, and I'm sure many other women, are also drawn to his positive attitude. Unlike Sethe who lets who past consume her and cloud her future with negativity, Paul D always sees the hope for a brighter future. This is refreshing for Sethe and pleasant to be around.
